SMTP Authentication Instructions
Monmouth Independence Networks are pleased to
announce the installation of email security enhancements. As of 05/19/2008 all
email transmitted through the Minet fiber network will be verified
through the use of SMTP Authentication.
What is SMTP
Authentication?
SMTP Authentication is a tool used to verify
that email is originating from a legitimate source. Before forwarding any email
to its requested destination the mail servers at Minet will check to
make sure it is originating from an email address within the Minet
network.
Why are we instituting the SMTP Authentication
policy?
By setting up SMTP Authentication, the
Minet mail servers will be able to verify that all email traffic coming from your computer is actually being sent by you. Most internet users today
are familiar with SPAM mail and the associated problems it can
cause. Email misuse by
SPAM occurs when an internet user sends email messages through
another users’ account, almost always without their knowledge or
consent. This
helps the “spammer” to mask their true source and sustain their
spamming activities. Putting SMTP Authentication in place is
an additional measure to protect our network against this type of
misuse.
How does this affect
me?
Outside of a one time change in how
your email account is configured, this change will not affect
you. After setting up
SMTP Authentication in your email client you will continue to use
your email account exactly as you had before.
Do I have to set up SMTP
Authentication?
SMTP Authentication only applies to
people who use a minetfiber.com email address through a third party
email client. If you only use the Minet webmail
site (webmail.minetfiber.com) to access your email then you do not
need to do anything. If
you use a third party email client such as Outlook, Outlook Express,
Thunderbird, or Mac Mail, you must follow the instructions below to
set up SMTP Authentication on your machine. If the changes have not been
made by the activation date your email will not be relayed through
our servers.
What if I don’t have a minetfiber.com email
address ?
If you do not have a minetfiber.com
email address or only use another web-based email provider, such as
Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, etc., then you do not need to do
anything.
What do I need to do
?
As mentioned above, if you only use
the Minet webmail site (webmail.minetfiber.com) to access your
email, you do not need to do anything. If you use a third party
email client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, or Mac
Mail, follow the instructions below to get SMTP Authentication set up
on your account today!
Steps for setting up SMTP Authentication on
your email client
In order to set up SMTP Authentication
on your email client you will first need to know your Minet user
name and password. Your
Minet user name is simply your email address, i.e. minetuser@minetfiber.com. Your password was put in
place when you initially started using your Minet email
account. If you do not
know what your password is you will need to contact Minet to have it
reset. If you have both your Minet email
address and password, follow the instructions below to set up SMTP
Authentication.
Click on the email client application you use
below. If you do not
see your client in this list, contact Minet for assistance at (503)
837-0700.
